I completed a Ph. D in Adult Education at the University of Michigan (U of M) in 1981. While at U of M, I also took many art history courses. In 1982, I was hired by the University of Wyoming (UW) to head their graduate degree program in adult education; I have taught at UW ever since. Sprinkled liberally with the visual arts, my primary teaching and scholarship areas have examined both pedagogy and foundational themes – philosophy, values, and history. More recently I have woven the above areas into residential learning in wilderness areas.

More and more, I’m integrating photography and naturalists themes into my curriculum. My work in residential adult education in wilderness areas seems to be a culmination of this steady amalgamation. Included in this section are some recent presentations and writings that examine some of my interests. There is also information about upcoming residential programs (with graduate-credit options) and information about the book authored by Ellen Petrick and myself Designing Residential Wilderness Programs for Adults.

I very much enjoy photography. I began taking “purposeful” outdoor photographs in 1970 --  consciously trying to capture characteristics of natural as well as culturally-impacted surroundings.

Beginning in 2002, I set a personal goal to develop my skills and sensitivities as a photographer – I read a lot and have taken lots of photographs. In the years to come, I plan to spend increasing amounts of my time enjoying and pursuing wilderness subjects. In this section are links to a small gallery of some favorite images, as well as a few limited edition prints and posters for sale.

I have been involved in adult residential learning in and near wilderness areas since 1997. During this time I met and worked closely with some very caring, knowledgeable, and energetic naturalists – their enthusiasm for wild places continues to be contagious. I now can think of nothing more important to my own emotional and physical health as well as to my work as an educator and photographer than preserving wild places. This theme is touched upon in recent presentations and in the book authored by Ellen Petrick and myself Designing Residential Wilderness Programs for Adults.
